Domestic, sharing, interoperability ecosystems for sustainable, safe and comfortable living.

This project promotes an “interoperability framework, that is open, free and accessible; it is the enabling tool for vertical solutions in different areas, with different functions (energy, comfort, safety and security management). The final aim is to guarantee interoperability between domestic living and all the devices on in; thanks to this interoperability, there will be more energetic efficiency, safety and comfort for everybody.

In this way, home is a functional place of a more extended Smart Community, open to new opportunities of Smart Cities and Smart Grid.

The project suggests new domestic approach, in which home is a combination of different sharing and interoperability ecosystems. Home will have a complete technological style, based on interfaces’ integration and sensors for ambient intelligence to achieve the interoperability of system.

So, the project defines devices’ ontology (virtual or not), semantic description of their possible interactions,hardware design, sensor-networking interoperability.

Once the new approach for acquisition of information and execution actions is implemented, it is time to analyse the level of services that home can offer. For the achievement of this aim, there is the manager’s concept: a set of algorithms that escape from physical devices but they work on functions, excluding systems’ details.

The project provides integration activities, prototype and functional testing, linked to the interface module for native interoperability, to the gateway necessary to support interoperability of legacy devices, to sensor networks. This activity tests hardware and software components of framework, and evaluates its quality and performance. The consequent outcome is to evaluate project’s results, to attest the interoperability architecture, to identify procedures for the market. Every single manager should have the same approach once interoperability framework is available.

The model of sharing, qualified according to interoperability objective, represents the common aspect of the themes above. It allows sharing and exposition of data and actions of domestic living and inside “home system”. This sharing permits an adapted and advanced interaction Human- Robots, and the interaction of home with more organised structures (smart grid, smart communities).


Active Ageing at Home

This project promotes Ambient Assisted Living and its aim is to realize an integrated and innovative system that will enhance elderly’s life (autonomous, with eventually fragilities or diseases due to ageing, someone who need a light and soft help). Thanks to this system, elderly can continue to be independent in their home, wellbeing and being an active part of their own health.

In particular, this project will develop an intelligence living:

  • Monitor aspects linked to health and psychophysics wellbeing of people, through a virtual model focused on individual characteristics; this model supplies personalised information through the interaction with the individual. The subject is more conscious of not healthy behaviours and it is an active part of its own health.
  • Act as a personal guidance, through gateway that offer information about people (domestic gateway, phone/smartphone, wearable devices) and valuate the individual changes over time, in order to promote correct behaviour to prevent the emergence of disease or to oppose to aggravation.
  • Realise prevention activity, detecting critical situations or risk, to avoid false alarms and then intervening. This technologies use smart sensors, smart actuators, smart devices. They are heterogeneous, connected, distributed, integrated in a technological platform based on a cloud infrastructure. In this way it is possible to organise data in a remote, reliable, secure, adaptable, performing system that allow a separate access to data, without the support of the single apparatus or device. The platform would represent a virtual model of individual, through a large use of intelligent interconnected microsystems (fixed or mobile) and logical inferences. This device allows data’s analysis and pattern analysis to carry out a monitor of individual needs. It is an adaptive model, focused on wellbeing of individual, not only physical but also psychological.
  • Promote physical activity, through a Personal Fitness System that suggests exercises according to individual profile, physical characteristics and personal preferences. It also valuates the correct execution through gesture’s sensors. Collected data will send to a remote server and here a particular system will extrapolate key information and will spread it to different subjects (parents, caregivers, services’ suppliers). In this way critical situations are automatically find; it is an efficient monitor systems.
  • Foster activities about participation and inclusion in the community, through services that consider elderly as conscious, critical and informed users. They require more personalised services, realised with the active involvement of people, enhancing their remaining resources for the community’s benefit. The idea is to create a support net, (composed by kin, doctors, neighbour) with new forms of social services, in which technological ad human skills are strictly integrated. Monitoring services, for example, can be characterized by a combination of sensor networks or new caregivers’ classes, which work as human sensors. These services pick up information about people and there are resources to manage services.
  •  According to user centered methodologies, the following procedures will be designed:
  • Solutions to high security and self-reliance at home: avoid intrusion, monitoring and localization indoor through active and passive vision system and through:
  • Radio- frequency
  • Multi-sensory solutions to prevent or detect critical or potential events, related to person (falls, unconsciousness, difficulty walking) and to environment (flooding, presence of gas or smoke, …)
  • Multi-sensory solutions of primary and secondary prevention of cognitive and affective disease, through the analysis of behaviour pattern focused on Activities of Daily Leaving (ADL, inactivity) social life, routine.
  • Evaluation Systems of correct eating behaviours in case of possible disease and maintaining a balanced diet.
  • Personal Fitness Solutions for regular physical activity with gesture’s recognition and adaptation to users’ profile.
  • Socialisation’s solutions that will create social network ad hoc, based on elderly’s interests and possibilities. This network would offer edutainment services, for example, can offer the possibility to read book, newspaper, magazines, or other topics in which users are interested in, join discussion groups on specific topics, share pictures and stories, be in touch with family and friends, participate and organize events, participate in online games (individually or in groups).
  • Interaction Solution Design created specifically for elderly, according to a user centered vision, focused on familiarity, pleasantness and positive impact in life.

The creation of a domotic ambient causes needs of interaction, at the same time, between different devices (basically it is necessary that devices “speak between them” with a common language). It is important to manage and supply information at different levels (not only content but also details). Therefore, there are two topics:

  • The design and implementation of a framework for the integration of software, through an architecture that manages information and allows the exchange of such information;
  • The development of methodologies and technologies for advanced Human Machine Interaction, with the implementation of Users Interfaces, that are holistic and adaptive, and everyone can use it (topics: Design for all, User Centered Design).

The need of a “common language” carry out a model of semantic data for domestic ambient (formal representation, simply and clear conceptualisation of an interest field). This model should manage knowledge, to create a repository (an informative system in which data are organised through relational tables) that due to a complete, digital model of ambient living and technologies on it.

This model should have an implementation, and it will be modular and extensible, so it is possible to use it, even if it is not entirely define.

Once there is the ontology, it is time to identify a framework software for the integration of software’s devices (in particular User Centered). In order to achieve the interaction between different devices, it is necessary to define and implement “connectors” that allow the interaction software-digital model (in this way it links model to projected framework). The conclusive activity of the first part of the project is linked to the design and the development of a layer, to receive information from field (Project 1) and their use inside framework. 

The second theme of the project manages the transition from a functional interface to a holistic and adaptive interface. Users can simply program such new interface. Activities in this field will develop:

  • methodologies, procedures and innovative technologies for the evaluation of usability/accessibility of users;
  • software systems that elaborate information from specific sensors embedded in home devices (smart objects);
  •  example of smart objects (furniture and appliances);
  • adaptive users’ interfaces and with high usability.
