Reason Why

The demographic change and in particular the progressively ageing population (by 2020 approximately 25% of European population will be more than 65). The increasing demand of an environmental sustainability and the reduction of raw materials consumption (ambient living are the major users of these resources). The increasing demand of safety, in both aspects, security and safety of ambient living.


Areas of Interest

ICT systems for ambient living, home automation, Ambient Intelligence (AI), Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) with particular attention to wellbeing, comfort, social inclusion, home care, security and health.


The European, National, Local context

Horizon 2020: Smart living technologies contents, in particular ICT, Key Enabling Technologies (KET) and Societal Challenges priorities. Health contents in particular “health, demographic change and wellbeing”, “inclusive, innovative and secure societies”; Joint Programme “Ambient Assisted Living”; Joint Programme Initiative (JPI) “More years, better life”. European Innovation Partnership (EIP) contents, in particular “Active and healthy ageing”.

At national level: the cluster’s objectives are totally agree with the general strategic plan. They promote social inclusion, services for quality of life and attractive territories, and they work according to the National Plan for Research.

At local level: Regions, who take part to the project, have a large number of public and private subjects that work in research and development’s activities to boost clusters.



The cluster Smart Living Technologies (SLV) wants to boost, through scientific and technologic excellence, the attractiveness of investments in developing and strategic processing systems.

Its objectives are: infrastructural consolidation of research and its technological transfer according with needs and expectations of national productive realities; support to creation and participation of national and international projects; identification of current innovation barriers; identification of opportunities in active and healthy ageing; improving the interaction degree of citizens (above all fragile and older persons) with technologies; implementation of a solid link between research field and production or credit field; promotion of scientific and technological competences on the national territory through the creation of shared databases; accessibility to structure and tools for research; dimensional growth and internationalization of enterprises; promoting the development of technological entrepreneurship with the creation and implementation of new enterprises and spin off with a high technological level; promotion of higher education to develop high qualified human resources; spread the culture of innovation.


Expected Results

Some of the expected results of SLT cluster are: new products and components for automated systems and technological equipment; new components and communication systems to improve the accessibility and management of indoor and outdoor spaces; technological platforms for the integration and the interoperability of a flexible configuration; new sensors and microsystems; wearable technologies; non-invasive devices for the prevention of dangerous situation; wireless sensor networks to find the user; advanced systems to avoid intrusion; microsystems for the energetic supply; new software and hardware architecture to organise domestic life; smart objects; mobile and smart technologies; new systems to receive medical information and monitor vital parameters; new systems for home care; new devices and systems for social inclusion; new elderly, friendly interfaces.
